P14 - Trachycarpus oreophilus

The Thai Mountain Fan Palm (Trachycarpus oreophilus) is next the Jubea chilensis in the Adobe enclosure. It was a generous gift from the Northern California Palm Society.

Trachy means 'rough' and carpus means fruit (καρπος (karpos)). Not sure if the fruit is rough or not! We need to check. It's supposed to be kidney-shaped, too.

The trunk is rough, like other Trachycarpus palms.

The rough fibers on the trunk do give the trunk a resemblance somewhat to a Wookiee, hence the nickname Wookiee-palm. The fibers are used for rope, brushes, and brooms.

Our Thai Mountain Fan Palm is quite small still.
