Etymology: The name Syagrus is thought by some to have been given by Pliny (Pliny, the Elder, Chapter 9, mentions the name) and it means "wild boar" and describes the taste of the palm's date or color. The specific epithet, romanzoffiana is named after Nikolay Rumyantsev (1754–1826), who was Russia's Foreign Minister and Imperial Chancellor and notable patron of the Russian voyages of exploration.
